January 10, 2006 A new web space is unleashed and all friends of Refrigerator are invited to join: http://www.myspace.com/lonesomesurprise This MySpace site allows people to meet and share thoughts about Refrigerator (and other subjects too) while listening to music samples, swapping photos, etc. It promises to be an exciting community where news is released and ideas are exchanged "as it happens". Keep an eye out for lots of "exclusive" content there. Per Allen, most of the mixing on the new album is done and they hope to have it completed in February. Stay tuned here and check into the MySpace community for more details in the near future. |
| July 31, 2005 Some very nice info. to pass on as the summer chugs along (including Live Concert August 26): (A) New recordings are being made over the summer and continue into August. 2004 Allen was gracious enough again to provide us with some great track-by-track liner notes for the upcoming CD. Read on: "Johnny Blaze - A loving homage
to the legendary Grandma Callaci written by Dennis which I initially
completely mistook as a brotherly jab at my comic book collecting ways.

| August 12, 2004 Allen advised me of some slight changes to the details on the new album "Upstairs In Your Room". In a nutshell: (a) New and earlier release date of October 4 (originally posted as October 15 ... sooner is better) (b) Slight change to cover artwork (see revised pic below under July 16 posting) (c) Changes to song titles and listing (see immediately below) 1. Johnny Blaze 2. Radio Barstow 3. Upstairs In Your Room 4. Sea Above 5. A Crown Of Smoke 6. Here Comes The One 7. OK, Not Today 8. Anyone Else's Arms 9. Your Sister & Me 10. Paris 11. Rudy Valentino (d) Posting of the Revolver one-sheet promo / ad for the new LP. It is downloadable to the left or also in the revised discography section under the "Upstairs ..." CD section. |
| August 02, 2004 Changed artwork and layout of the website including new navigation menu to side. |
| July 19, 2004 Allen provided the tentative song list for the new LP: "It'll be 11 songs long and here is a track listing (all song titles subject to change of course): 1. Johnny Blaze 2. Radio Barstow 3. Upstairs In Your Room 4. Sea Above 5. Dracula 6. Here Comes The One (... Better Than The Last One Anyway) 7. OK Not Today 8. Whoever Comes Next 9. Slow Motion Almost 10. Paris 11. Rudy Valentine" On another note, he wrote that he feels the new album is one of the noisiest things they've done in a long time. Sweet. |

July 16, 2004 Allen got in touch regarding the artwork for the new album (see left): "The record is definitely going to be called '"upstairs in your room" and looks like it will be unleashed on October 15. We are still tinkering with the cover art a little so it might be slightly different by the time it comes out." |

| July 10, 2001 The Album: Oh yes, Refrigerator's upcoming CD "Comedy Minus One" is out now (October 8)! In a preview below, Allen Callaci shared some thoughts on each of the eleven new tracks: (we'll maybe add some short 30-45 sec. mp3 previews of the songs soon) 1. For Good: An acoustic number with some crazy bass work by the one and only Daniel Brodo thrown in for good measure. The line/chorus/musical question "what use is for good?" was recycled/stolen/rehashed from an old bux tune. 2. Scratch 11: I thought it'd be fun to write a song with a bunch of baseball metaphors "pull in your fences" "come sliding home safe" etc. Dead backyard and bed facing the freeway imagery courtesy Fontana, California and the "if I could change your mind, but I cant change what isn't mine" sentiment courtesy of St. Christopher. A half futile argument of a song about trying to convince someone that sometimes staying can be just as good a solution to life's trials and tribulations as fleeing. 3. Never Nowhere: I really thought we'd actually finally recorded a honest to goodness romantic love song after we recorded this one, until I played it for a friend and told her I thought of it as such, and after she heard it made the observation that "I'm never nowhere when I'm with you" is not exactly the kindest, fuzziest expression one person can say to another. 4. Freeway Close: About three years ago we were touring up north and I'd lost my voice, twisted my ankle, was unhappy with my job at the time and planning on leaving it as soon as we the tour ended, and throughout the whole tour there was nothing but gray skies and rain. Anyway, I was in a pretty bleak mood for most of the tour and really starting to miss the California warmth of home. We were playing Seattle and we got into town a little early and went into a small newsstand by the club we were playing and I bought a copy of the Sunday LA times they had there for 5 bucks and somehow it made me feel a whole lot better. Emily Marsh who ironically enough lives in Seattle helps out on vocals on this one. 5. XOXOX: Its been awhile since Dennis sang lead on a Refrigerator record so this is his moment to shine. This was a song originally written while we were working on Glitter Jazz. 6. Twilight Show: This was the last song written for the record and recorded on Chris' 4 track. A first date jitters kind of a song. 7. Anna Vincent: Inspired by a second cousin, who's grandfather (my uncle) passed away about 12 years ago. Anna was given the middle name of Vincent in tribute to him. He was a published poet, a scholar, and along with my other uncle played in a vaudeville type band (they even played the Sullivan show once). My uncle lived on the east coast and died while I was still fairly young so although I met him at a handful of family gatherings over that time I never really got to know him. The more I learn about him the more I wish I'd gotten that chance and this song is pretty much a musical message in a bottle to Anna in the hopes that we'll have that chance. 8. Memoirs of an Opening Act: As any comedy album historian could tell you not only did we lift the title of "comedy minus one" from an old Albert Brooks record but we also appropriated the title of this track from the aforementioned Albert Brooks album as well...anyway, I think this is a song that doesn't need a whole lot of explaining as it wears its bitterness and bile on its sleeve quite well. 9. Red Riding Hood: I love the slide guitar on this one. A good song to get lost in on a warm Sunday evening. 10. Fingerprints: Chris did some really good piano work on this one and that's Emily Marsh again haunting up the chorus. A song about the despairing frustration of not being able to save somebody from themselves. 11. Retire The Ghost: "or was it all just a meaningless front for you? A play divorce dressed as a trial separation for you. Will you come back 6 years later to the same apt. complex? A second chance at a lifetime of regret..." (See song number 10 description for further information) |

| January 2000 The Album: Refrigerator's newest CD "Glitter Jazz" is still available through Midheaven Mailorder / Revolver USA at: http://www.midheaven.com/fi (along with 30-second song samples in RealAudio !!)and is also available through other sources. As they noted in a previous e-mail update: "The fourth album, and first new material in over two years from the fraternal- magic rock institution that makes hearts go bump in the night. Now standing taller than ever as a quartet (stand-up fucking bass!) they deliver eleven new songs that yearn with emotion and churn with glory. Features guest appearances from indie faves FRANKLIN BRUNO, JODI of the SECRET STARS, IRA & GEORGE of YO LA TENGO, KARLE RUNGE from Europe, and MR. JOHN DAVIS of the FOLK IMPLOSION & THE JOHN DAVIS BAND. Touring the West Coast with Dump in October, hitting the East Coast in January. Excellent, excellent, excellent, not since Women and Children First have I ever been so happy." Track Listing: In his own wonderful words, Allen Callaci has provided us with a run down of the track listings for the new album: (This 07/15 posting is a slight revision from the original list ... the song "Soundwave" was removed from the final mix and several songs were switched in their order) 1. Tourists "Originally appeared on the 18 Wheeler long-play record. A song we always felt we could do better. This recording of it is similar to the version we played on KCRW. Featuring Franklin Bruno on piano and special guests Ira and Georgia from Yo La Tengo on backing vocals." 2. Uncertain Someone "The first of many waltzes on the new record. One of those rare songs that Dennis and I co-wrote lyrics to." 3. Western Disconnection "A reverb love anthem." 4. Los Angeles "Kind of strange...one of my favorites on the record...Karl from KSPC hitting the strings, Franklin adding some buzz and Bob Kaufman who produced the record joining us on guitar." 5. Heart of Bone "A 7 minute optigan epic lullaby. Written as a thank you note/love letter to KSPC, the college radio station here in Claremont that's been a beacon of light and hope in a suburban wasteland over the years. This one features Franklin on the keys and John Davis on acoustic guitar." 6. Drowning Out "Midsummer nights mid-tempo rocker. Franklin organ solo and Secret Stars' Jodi adding a vocal/rap coda." 7. Sunnyside Over "A straight ahead acoustic song with just guitar and vocals. The most lo-fi we've sounded in awhile." 8. Wedding Waltz "The lyrics were originally written for a record that Franklin and I still haven't got around to making, ended up here instead. Franklin plays piano on this one as well." 9. Left And Gone "Upbeat (surprise, surprise) pop song. Franklin on backing vocals." 10. Static On Static "Stripped down weary countryish song. Originally written for the last CD but couldn't come up with a decent take of it 'til now. KSPC Karl on the violin." 11. Sweet A.M. "Only song on the new one recorded by longtime producer Bob Durkee. A late night blues kind of thing. Dennis jokingly thought we should call this one Sweet Ann...I told him Sweet Ann was a terrible title for a song...imagine my chagrin when I found out that one of the songs on the upcoming Pavement (whom I really love by the way) record was called Sweet Ann..." |
