Reviews:
(Split review w/ "How You
Continue Dreaming")
I hereby proclaim Refrigerator the best game in town - a title
they easily win with the song "Bicycle" alone but further
cemented by throwing off some of the loosest and best
poetry-in-motion I've heard since M.I.A.-Deluxx (what happened to them?!).
Allen Callaci sings his small town/boy-next-door/real stories of the
Upland PD to the tune of brother Dennis' guitar and some trade-off drums
by Joel Connel and Chris Jones. The Brinkman and Communion discs were
released almost simultaneously and share the aforementioned "Bicycle" (
... and she's got your eyes and she looks almost like you / as she rides
off ... ) as well as a few others ("Speedway", "Party Hat", "Sorry State
Line") performed acoustically on the Brinkman disc (The weatherman said it
was a perfect night for a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, but I'm glad I'm
here, feeling like I'm sitting on my back stoop, watching the sun sink
behind Upland's foothills, intoxicated by the fragrant orange blossoms)
"Son House," "98 Pounds," "83 Ford," "How You Continue Dreaming," "Green &
White Meet Blue."
I'm positively enamored.

Maybe a companion release for their
Communion LP 'How You Continue Dreaming' or maybe not. The opening and
title track was taken from that LP. The other's are alternative takes, out
takes or new songs. Some acoustic pieces, some recorded live to one track.
Certainly Refrigerator and definitely something special. The Callaci
brother's, on this occasion mainly Allen, continue to break hearts with
their sorrowful voices. As always a stunning collection, but don't just
take my word for it I've been hooked for years! Thirteen tracks, thirty
minutes.

It's ironic that the 'frigs
latest compilation is named after one of my favorite tunes by them (it has
two versions of the song "Bicycle", one being acoustic) and that the cover
art (if you consider cd's 5x5 inch paper, cover art in the visual sense),
has a picture of a dead opossum on it (my attic is home to a Mormon family
of them.) This is a very inspirational record consisting of one track
takes, soon to have you re-stringing your guitar and writing songs out on
back porch. 11 songs. 29 minutes.
